Your Liver: Hard at Work!

October 1st, 2009 admin Posted in Health advice in dentistry No Comments »

The liver is the largest glandular organ in the body and is responsible for the healthy functions of just about every other organ. Practically, everything we eat and inhale goes through the liver for purification. The liver also has other important functions and it is therefore necessary to make sure that we are taking care of our liver. In a healthy adult, the liver weighs about 3 lbs., about 6 inches thick and about 3.5 inches long.
What Does the Liver Do?
The liver basically works as the detoxification center in your body but performs other important functions as well.

  • Blood flows into the liver. The liver works to filter the blood of toxins and impurities before it is sent to the other organs. Where do toxins come from? It comes from the foods we eat (processed and fast food), the medications we take, alcohol intake, the air we breathe and other environmental pollutants.
  • The liver also serves the digestive system by producing bile (stored in the gall bladder) for the effectual breaking down of fats.
  • The liver is also the body’s storehouse. Many vitamins and minerals, especially iron, are stored in the liver and released to the body as and when required. It also stores immunologic cells for the immune system.
  • The liver produces energy for the body through the conversion of stored glycogen to glucose.
  • The body’s metabolism largely takes place through the liver. The liver metabolizes lipids, carbohydrates and proteins.
  • Liver functions also involve producing blood clotting substances to help in the coagulation of blood.

Are You Overtaxing Your Liver?
A healthy liver is able to filter about 540 gallons of blood a day, but when the liver is overtaxed by too much alcohol consumption, smoking, saturated fats, environmental pollution or too many foods that contain chemicals, the liver is not able to filter all the blood that passes through it.

moking and excess alcohol consumption can heavily tax the liver. Smoking contains more than 60 chemicals. It also weakens the capacity of red blood cells so that they are not able to function fully in transporting oxygen through the blood stream to all other organs.

The standard American diet can also put stress on the liver. Many fast foods contain a lot of saturated fats and processed foods contain chemicals and preservatives. Non-organic vegetables and fruits contain pesticides. The liver can become laden with fat and is unable to function efficiently.

The liver cannot cope with the excess stress and can become overwhelmed. As a result, toxins can build up in the body. The high levels of toxins in the body can lead to the poor function of other organs in the body. Fatigue, acne, headaches, age spots, excessive itching, poor immune health may be associated with poor liver functions.

Considering the liver performs so many important functions, taking proper care of it should be a priority!

Ways to Care for Your Liver
There are several ways to take care of your liver. Adopt a healthy lifestyle—avoid excessive intake of saturated fats, alcohol and quit smoking. Eat plenty of fruits and vegetables every day. Cut down on animal fats, caffeine, sugars and fried foods. In addition to a healthy diet, several herbs and nutrients, in well-formulated liver vitamins, are popularly known and used to optimize the functions of the liver.

  • Milk Thistle. This comes from the daisy family. It is known to have liver protective and liver regenerating properties. It aids in detoxification and also helps to ease mild digestive disorders.
  • Psyllium Husk. This is an Food and Drug Administration-approved fiber and helps to produce nutrients for the liver that it uses to regulate normal cholesterol levels.
  • Dandelion root extracts help to protect liver cells. They support blood health and detoxification.
  • Artichoke powder has liver protective and liver supporting properties. If you are thinking of purchasing artichokes for dinner, remember to purchase the organic ones as they are free from pesticides.
  • Slippery Elm Bark contains mucilage which helps in relieving some of the digestive disturbances caused by poor liver functions.
  • Taurine is an amino acid, which has antioxidant properties. It plays a major role in the removal of toxic chemicals from the body.

Liverol, a nutritional liver supplement for the liver, contains a well-formulated blend of all the above nutrients and herbs. Stop taxing your liver, and give this hardworking organ of your body a helping hand—modify your diet and start taking liver supplements to support detoxification and healthy liver functions!

8 Cups of Water Per Day an Urban Legend?

September 15th, 2009 admin Posted in Health advice in dentistry No Comments »

You’ve probably heard that it takes 8 glasses of water per day to have a healthy diet. Is it possible that this could be an urban legend?

Nobody knows exactly where it started, but this is one that everyone has heard. If you don’t drink 8 cups of water per day, you are likely to be severely dehydrated and a cavalcade of diseases and bodily ills await you. The bottom line is, yes it is important to drink water, but if you don’t drink 8 cups a day, you’re actually very likely to be just fine. Most people can stay perfectly hydrated on significantly less than that per day.

There could be an explanation for this in the 60 billion dollar bottled water industry. Could it be they cooked this up to make us feel more compelled to pick up the natural substance that they’ve figured out how to sell back to us at a markup of up to 3000%? As the old 90s song says, this is “ponderous”.

All conspiracy theories aside, the 8 glasses of water myth may be so prevalent because there is some truth to it. Normal biological functions such as sweating, breathing, and urinating, deplete the body of about 2 liters of water per day. So logic dictates, perhaps you need to drink that much each day to replenish supply. This isn’t true. You can easily get a liter to 1 ½ liters of water simply from the food you eat. If you eat a lot of fruits and vegetables, they are actually up to 90% water, so the hydrating power of these foods is very significant.

Another urban legend is the notion that coffee, tea, and soda dehydrate the body. This isn’t true. You actually become hydrated by drinking these beverages almost as well as if you were drinking water. The diuretic effect of these types of drinks is actually negligible.

Of course, water is good for you. You’re actually better off drinking water than just about anything else. It is also an excellent guard against kidney stones and other ailments. It is a natural cleanser, helping your body flush out potentially harmful elements, and keeping things in generally healthy working order.

There are exceptions to the notion that 8 cups are really not required each day. The elderly are at risk of elevated dehydration, so they should be careful to drink sufficient quantities of water each day. Excessive thirst can be a warning of diabetes, so this should be carefully monitored when it occurs. Those who are involved in strenuous exercise need a lot more fluids than other people, and should be drinking 8 or more cups of water per day if they are exercising heavily on a daily basis.

Generally speaking, drinking water should be a constant daily habit. It just doesn’t need to be obsessed over as much as it has been lately. Another important daily habit is to take a good multivitamin. This is one of those daily routines that ensures you are getting the proper vitamins and minerals, particularly those that are harder to come by like the B vitamins, folic acid, and vitamin D.

Stick to the daily habits that really matter, and don’t worry too much about water. And by all means, don’t think that the only healthy water is found in bottles that are way overpriced. The US is very careful to ensure healthy drinking water is coming right out of the tap, so put your tax dollars to good use and drink it up!

The Foundations of Diet and Exercise: Why Vitamins and Protein will help you lose weight

September 9th, 2009 admin Posted in Health advice in dentistry No Comments »

Many people get excited to lose weight, and jump onto the latest trendy fad diet.  South Beach, Atkins, Flat Belly, Juice Diet, Chocolate Diet; fad diets often don’t work!  They all sound good in theory, but in practice it can be very difficult to follow their prescribed foods.  The main reason is that fad diets set people up to consume the same or very similar foods day after day.  How boring could that possibly be?  The beauty of food is its diversity and richness.  Dieting shouldn’t be about sticking to three or four low calorie meals, but instead about enjoying the diversity of food and giving your body balanced and healthy fuels.  The key to staying on a successful diet plan is to give yourself the wiggle-room to enjoy foods.  By providing your body with all the nutrition it needs, it can be safe and exciting to try different foods.  Remember, when you enjoy what you eat – you will keep eating it.

The key to having flexibility in your diet is to know how to find the nutrients your body needs in different places.  Knowing that you can find vitamin C in red peppers, kiwifruit, broccoli and papaya can help you avoid eating oranges every morning.  In fact, knowing that there is MORE vitamin C in kiwifruit and papaya than oranges can encourage eating less and getting more.  Almost everyone knows that having an orange or grapefruit in the morning is a good source of vitamin C, but imagine how much fuller your life can be if you enjoy exotic and delicious flavors like kiwifruit and papaya.

Another way to increase your wiggle room is to maximize the food you are eating.  Avoid empty calories!  An empty calorie is a wasted calorie.  Be sure that all your pasta and four products are made with whole grains.  Drink fruit juices rather than sodas.

Sharing recipes with your friends and other dieters can be another great tool towards encouraging a diversity of food.  All of us have our own cooking ruts, so trading recipes is a great way to push us to cook with foods that are new to us.  This helps keep the fun in your diet, because you will be able to experiment and try new things.  If cooking with different foods is intimidating, make a party out of it.  Let your friends teach you how to cook with new foods and spend time learning about food.

Taking a multivitamin is another way provides super flexible wiggle room.  Hearing about a great new low-calorie meal can be a great way to keep your interest in food and dieting; but it will hurt you more than help if you aren’t sure that you are getting enough vitamins.  Taking a multivitamin gives your body everything it needs each day, and provides you with the flexibility to explore the food diversity on the planet.

The best part of a multivitamin is that if you take one, you can be less concerned about the nutrition of each individual thing you eat, and more concerned with following your diet. Rather than waste time worrying about getting enough Vitamin B, you can worry about what new and exciting low-calorie meals you will prepare next.

Green Tea Healthy Energy Boost

September 1st, 2009 admin Posted in Health advice in dentistry 1 Comment »

Do you have lots to do but can’t seem to muster the energy to get up and get them all done? Are you exhausted often? Do you feel like the demands made on you are more than you can keep up with? Everyone feels this way at some point. So what can be done to boost your energy in easy, healthy way?

Green tea is an excellent way to get a natural energy boost. Green tea has been used medicinally in China for thousands of years.  It comes from the leaves of a plant called Camellia sinensis and, of the three types of teas that come from this plant, it is the least processed and best for you. Green tea will give you a spike in energy because it is a natural source of caffeine. It boosts your metabolism and helps you to burn fat as well. Studies have shown that those who take green tea have more energy and loose more weight than those who take a placebo.

The reason why green tea is so good for you is because it is brimming with antioxidants. Antioxidants fight off the free radicals in your body which otherwise mess with your cells, altering cell DNA or killing them. Green tea contains potent antioxidants called polyphenols. They are great news for your body because they fight off many types of cancer, heart disease, infection, and high cholesterol levels. It may also help ward off tooth decay. Polyphenols are most likely responsible for the boost in metabolism and fat burning traits of green tea as well.

The only known negative side effect to green tea is that some experience insomnia because of the caffeine. However, green tea has less caffeine than coffee and if you use up the extra energy by working out, take only moderate amounts, and do not take it before trying to sleep, this should not be a problem.

You can drink green tea on its own to gain health benefits but it also comes in other supplements. One of these is in the form of Good Energy Healthy Chocolate. This combines a good tasting milk chocolate with substances to promote natural energy and weight loss. It includes green tea as well as Guarana, Carnitine and Acetyl Carnitine, Eluthero Extract, and Inosine to increase energy and burn fat, Hoodia Extract to suppress appetite, and CoQ10, A-Lipoic acid, Magnesium, Zinc, Glutamine, and B Vitamins to supply antioxidants. It is a good addition to your diet to give an energy increase and help with some of your other goals too. Eating a chocolate or two a day can give you helpful nutrients and cut down on your chocolate cravings.

Green tea is a great way to boost up your energy. There are other methods you can enact and supplements you can take but green tea is simple and fast. It also much healthier than chugging energy drinks. Adding green tea to your day can help give you that extra zing you need to complete all the tasks required of you.

Anxiety Attacks – Change Your Eating Habits and Reduce Your Anxiety!

August 22nd, 2009 admin Posted in Health advice in dentistry 3 Comments »

If you´re struggling with generalized anxiety, phobias or panic attacks, you need to find a solution fast!  Having these overwhelming fears surge over you can be extremely disturbing, disorienting and life altering.

So many people feel they are experiencing a medical emergency or on the verge of death when their heart starts exploding out of their chest and their breathing becomes labored. Anxiety and panic attacks are terrifying feelings and can lead to many phobias that severely alter the way you proceed throughout your day.

Everyone is always looking for a quick fix to these problems, a simple snap of the fingers. While some changes can provide immediate relief, they are rarely so simple as snapping your fingers.

Confronting, dealing with and resolving your anxiety takes hard work and motivation. One of the easier places to begin is changing your nutritional intake.

Most people here the words change the way you eat and they go running for the nearest exit.  Why? Because they know they aren´t eating right but they also like the bad foods they are eating and don´t want to change.

Change can be very unsettling for most people but it might be a great thing for your anxiety problem. Here are some eating habits that you should follow to prevent high stress levels and decrease your anxiety.

1. Eat slowly while seated.

2. Chew your food at least 15 times. This helps you eat less because your body has time to register that you are full and it helps your body with easier digestion.

3. Avoid overeating. You never want to feel bloated or stuffed. This is putting a strain on your body´s metabolism and preventing proper absorption of nutrients and vitamins in the food.

4. Drink 1 glass of water or liquid at a meal. If you drink too much while eating, your body will have a harder time digesting your food because your stomach acids will be diluted.

Proper digestion of your food intake is a very important part of feeling physically well during the day. You will not suffer from bloating, cramps, gas and will not detract energy and resources from the rest of your body to deal with an enormous food intake.

Get the most out of what you are eating and help your body function at its optimum level. When your body is functioning well you will experience fewer stress and anxiety related symptoms and discourage panic attacks and anxiety.

Other important dietary considerations include watching your salt and preservatives intake.

Read package labeling carefully and consider what you are putting in your body. You also want to ensure that you are getting enough vitamins in your diet. If not, you will want to take a supplement which is an easy and effective way to help your body get everything it needs.

Vitamin B and Vitamin C are particularly important because they help you manage stress throughout the day. Small changes in your diet and nutritional approach can help you cope with the anxiety you encounter throughout your day more effectively.

Stomach Exercise To Lose Belly Fat

August 9th, 2009 admin Posted in Health advice in dentistry No Comments »

By: Chung Leong Yu

There is no magical gizmos or high tech gadgets to help you get your abdominal muscle. You have to exercise to flatten stomach and get a lean, defined six-pack. Your dream of getting a sexy body with flat and trim abs is within your reach! Sculpt up with lower abdomen exercise and get rid of those love handles with exercise. Here is how!

Stomach Muscle Exercise

A good abdominal workout program requires high intensity muscular overload and an increase in intensity progressively. Stomach exercise must be performed carefully so that the lower back is supported properly.

Stomach exercise can help build the entire abdomen region because the upper and lower abdominals are not separated and are connected. Of course, there are some stomach exercises that can help build and strengthen specifically the lower and upper abdominal muscles.
Abdominal exercises can help you also gain strong stomach muscles and back muscles. This can reduce the likelihood of back pains and provide protection against injury by efficient response to stress.

Lets have a deeper look into the muscles in the abdominal area. The Rectus abdominals is the muscle that stretches down the stomach from your ribs to the hips. The external and internal oblique run down the sides of the waist and their job is to rotate the torso and assist the abdominals during curling and twisting movements.

Stomach exercises are needed to tone or harden the muscles in that area. Not only that, the layer of body fat that is covering the abs must be burn off and this could be only done with proper eating plan. Try to increase your protein intake and limit your carbohydrates, eating a low carbohydrate diet is said to be one way of tackling flabby abs along with a sensible abs exercise routine, strength training and cardio exercise.

Stomach exercise

Stomach exercise must be followed religiously and is all about frequency rather than intensity. No exercise must be continued if it leads to pain or extreme discomfort. The best stomach exercise program can also help you achieve a flat and tight stomach. Many an abs exercise can be performed on the floor. Like any other muscles, the abdominal muscles will react to resistance training like bicep curls and crunches.

A simple pelvic tilt performed while sitting in a chair can strengthen your abdominal muscles and help support the back.

Best Stomach Exercises

Crunch

Lay on your back and knees bent, lift your shoulders off the floor. The emphasis is on moving the ribs towards the hips.

Reverse Curl

Lay on your back, bend your knees towards the chest. Keep the hips on the floor. Contract your abdominal muscles at the same time. Your lower abdominal exercise program must include reverse curls.

Leg raise

Single leg raise involves raising one leg from the floor. The double leg raise involves raising both legs from the floor at the same time and this works as an abdominal muscle exercise. Lying leg raises are ideal lower abdominal exercise

Abs exercise with the ball

The stability ball is an effective training device for the abs and lower back. Due to the curve of the exercise ball, the lower abdominal muscles get trained better on account of the greater range of motion.

Bicycle

It was ranked the best abdominal exercise by the American Council on Exercise. When performed with the abs muscles pulled, this exercise does great things for you.

Plank

For this exercise program, you need to position yourself for a pushup and hold the pose. Ensure that your body is in one long, straight line from head to toes.

Captains chair

This abs exercise involves standing on a gym chair and gripping the handholds. Press your back against the head pad and slowly lift your knees towards your chest. The back must remain straight.

Postnatal stomach exercise

A lot of women just cannot wait to get back in shape after childbirth. But before they can participate in any postnatal weight loss exercise program, they have to consult their doctor first.

Pelvic tilts and simple abs contractions are an ideal way to start on a postnatal lower abdomen exercise program. Combined with Kegels exercise, you can get your pelvic floor muscles back in shape. Isometric contractions can even be practiced with the baby on your stomach. Stick to a steady lower abs exercise program and watch the flabby skin harden.

Stomach exercise to flatten stomach

Getting a lean defined six-pack abs is a dream for most of us. Millions of dollars are spent yearly in the process of achieving a flat stomach and trim waistline. There are many gadgets that are sold to those seeking an exercise program getting the stomach fat down.

The first step towards a lean waist and flat stomach is to remove the fat that sits on the abs. A combination of cardiovascular exercise program coupled with a low fat diet aimed at preventing fat can do wonders. Stomach exercise program would include the following:

Forward flexion exercises such as sit-ups and crunches.

Rotational exercises such as trunk rotations and standing twists

Stomach Exercise for love handle

Love handles are a misnomer, as all women would love to shun them. Love handles are the ugly fat belts around the waist. This lump of flesh starts at the side of the bra-line and extends all the way down the back. Aerobic exercise aimed at this region can help you shed those love handles. Exercise for love handles involve exercising the oblique muscles to tighten up the sides of the waist. Abs crunches could also do the same.

Here is an easy stomach exercise for the oblique that you can do at home.

Sit upright with a stick across the back of your shoulders. Twist from side to side. Side bends also work wonders on love handles. Keep at it and watch these muscles firm into place.

A Proven Diet that will allow you to Shed up to a Pound Per Day

July 26th, 2009 admin Posted in Health advice in dentistry No Comments »

By: Emile A. Jarreau

If you are looking for something that will help you lose weight, it won’t take you long to find something. Actually, it won’t take you long to find EVERYTHING. Weight loss programs, diets, and exercise products make up the category of some of the best selling products in existence. Pills, potions, and programs all promising to help you get into the best shape of your life are virtually everywhere, but do they work?

Some do to be sure, but their actual results vary greatly. If you are looking for something that is just about guaranteed to help you shed some serious weight, as much as a pound per day or more, then you might want to start drinking some lemonade.

That’s right, one of the most effective diets in existence requires you to drink lemonade every day. The Master Cleanse Diet, often called the Lemonade Diet, is a detox type diet program that will help you to rid your body of unwanted toxins and undigested fecal matter and has been working for those who have used it for more than 60 years.

Originally created in 1941 by Stanley Burroughs as a way to detoxify the body, the diet has sparked some recent interest due to well known celebrities such as Howard Stern’s sidekick Robin Quivers and singer Beyonce have had such great success with it. While the diet has shown great success from those who have used it, it is not easy by any means.

First of all, the drink itself consists of water, the juice of several real lemons, a teaspoon of cayenne pepper, and a tablespoon of organic maple syrup. By most accounts, the taste is actually not too bad, kinda like spicy lemonade. The hard part is, this is ALL you get to drink. Whether you choose to stay on the diet for 3 or 10 days or maybe even longer, the key is you can only drink this concoction and nothing else. Usually, dieters drink about 8 glasses of this drink per day and it begins to go to work immediately.

The Master Cleanse diet will rid your body of toxins and oftentimes pounds of undigested fecal matter in the colon. This matter can prevent needed nutrients from being absorbed in the body and can lead to an unhealthy state. Clearing and detoxifying your body using this Master Cleanse diet can not only help you lose weight quickly, it can also make you feel better than you have in year. Many people report feeling years younger after completing the diet and vow to make it a yearly or even more frequent ritual.

Be sure to use your due diligence when trying a diet of this nature. You should receive enough nutrients through the ingredients of the lemonade, but it is also wise to consult with your physician anytime you are going to undertake a food fasting diet of this kind. If you monitor your health, and stick to the program, you CAN be successful in losing up to a pound per day using this 60 year old liquid diet.

The Truth About Six Pack Abs – The Interview

July 5th, 2009 admin Posted in Health advice in dentistry No Comments »

Author: sheena

The single most significant factor to focus on is diet. Of course exercise also has a part to play, but number one is diet. After all what is the use of a fantastic set of abs which are covered by an excess of body fat?

Nowadays people are bombarded by contradictory marketing in the media, trying to tell them what is beneficial and what isn’t, what diet will promote fat loss and what won’t, the market is full of gimmicky diet books promoting vegetarian this, low fat that, high protein, fasting and so on, there are literally hundreds of them out there. The average person doesn’t know where to begin when it comes to selecting a fat loss diet.

Number two, focus on workout intensity and on working your body as a whole, this will provide the greatest metabolic response and target the loss of stubborn body fat. To get really lean, ensure your workouts are high intensity, minimize rest periods and work on the largest muscle groups of the body, there is no real need to focus on the smaller body parts using isolation exercises for small muscle groups like the shoulders biceps, or calves.

Third, specific training for the abs. When training the abs, if you require genuine results forget for the most part about crunches and sit ups. They are ok if you are really out of condition, but for most people who already follow a training routine there are exercises which provide a greater stimulus than crunches. Crunches actually provide a minimal amount of resistance to the abdominal region, and resistance is what develops, strengthens and tones the muscles. There are loads of great abdominal exercises in The Truth About Six Pack Abs.

One of the highest resistance abs exercises is hanging leg raises, but not how most people do them. The key to optimizing this exercise and getting the highest response in terms of effort in for results out is to curl your pelvis forward and up as you lift your legs. Very few people ever do this right. And indeed the majority of people can’t do this at first, but strategies are provided in The Truth About Six Pack Abs which offers a progression from less advanced techniques to doing these correctly.

The main thing that people do wrong when they try to achieve six pack abs is that they spend much too much time concentrating on training their abs, it may sound crazy but it’s true. Having six pack abs is all about reducing body fat to a very low percentage and to achieve that, your workouts must stimulate a hormonal response which maintains a fat burning environment in your body, and increases your metabolic rate. That will not happen if you focus too much of your time training a minor muscle group like the abs. You must focus the majority of your time on exercising the largest muscle groups like the chest, back and legs. This will stimulate your metabolism and the fat burning hormones which will make you truly lean and sporting that coveted six pack!

When it comes to development of the abs themselves, the best strategy is to work on all kinds of hanging abs exercises, the routine should also include a selection of good floor exercises such as lying leg thrusts – all of which are described and illustrated in The Truth About Six Pack Abs. However, there is no getting away from the fact that maximum definition comes from losing body fat, and the most valuable exercises featured in the program for this are a variety of swings and snatches, there are also some unique kettlebell or dumbbell exercises that hardly anyone else does in normal gyms, dead lifts, squats, step-ups, lunges, mountain climbers, clean & presses, sprinting, calisthenics and other full body exercises. If you want great looking abs, concentrate on those instead of focusing so much on directly training the abs.

A final word regarding diet, there is a very thorough discussion of this topic in The Truth About Six Pack Abs, this is so important that it represents almost half the book, but to help point people in the right direction immediately. The main thing is to ensure that your diet is as unprocessed and natural as possible. It always seems to come back to the over-processing of food which makes it unhealthy, this totally wrecks your metabolism and your internal hormone balance. For example, eat whole grains in preference to refined grains. Eat natural sources of sugar from high nutrient whole foods like fruit in preference to refined sugar. Avoid highly processed, refined, and hydrogenated vegetable oils – which incidentally are the worst thing commonly found in the modern diet, focus instead on natural sources of healthy fats like fish, eggs, nuts, organically raised meat, avocados, coconut milk, etc. Do not fall for gimmicks like low fat, low carbs, high protein, or any other combination that makes you focus on one macronutrient vs. another. Your body requires all macronutrients to remain healthy and obtain the variety of vitamins, minerals, antioxidants, etc. that it requires. Cutting out an entire food group out works against what your body needs. There is much more detail on this hugely important topic towards losing body fat for life in The Truth About Six Pack Abs.

So to summarize, Number 1 – Diet. Focus on a reduced consumption of refined foods in favor of fresh fruit, vegetables etc. Number 2 – Exercise. This should be based on high intensity workouts focusing on the larger body parts such as legs, chest and back. Number 3 – Abs exercises. These should be all about the use of exercises that increase the resistance applied to the muscle group over time.
