  2. Open Question: Buying braces with insurance? - hi my family just bought dental insurance. im waiting to get braces because my teeth are really crooked. but my parents say they cant buy braces for me because they have to wait one year after buying dental insurance. is this true?
  3. Open Question: Can I prove negligence in a dental malpractice case? - My #13 tooth broke in half while eating. It didn't hurt. It was just sharp & annoying. I called & scheduled an appt w/a new dentist I had never seen but my husband had seen her 1 time. Xrays were taken, root canal or pulling the tooth & a bridge or implant was suggested. I chose root canal. She said she could do it now. I was not told about nor did I sign anything about the dangers of a root canal. She numbed me up & once she started drilling she kept stopping & looking at my Xrays with her asst behind me. I finally asked if everything was ok since that had never happened. She said "Yes, it's just that sometimes when a tooth decay's it calcifies making it difficult to drill through so I work this stuff up there and it softens it up allowing me to drill further." Then she used a 50/50 flush on me that caused THE most awful stinging, burning pain that started to go from right above the tooth she was working on into the cheek tissue up toward my eye & all across my face to my nose. I kept saying Ow ow ow over & over. She frantically asked asst for flush & Novocaine she injected a lot up there that seemed to calm it a bit. It still hurt & now the pain felt like my cheek was REALLY swelling. The dentist attempted to complete the root canal & I told her I was sorry but that I was about to pass out from the pain & couldn't continue & needed to sit up. She left the room to give me a second to see if I would feel better. I told the asst about the severe pain & swelling sensation in my face. Without looking at me she said it was typical because lot of the Novocaine. When the dentist came back I sat up & she saw my face was extremely swollen like a softball inside of my left cheek, & she said "OH! Your face is REALLY swollen!" She told me that she thought that she had drilled too deep & that the bleach flush had gotten into my tissue. She excused herself to make a call. She returned after a few minutes stating she had contacted an endodontist & that she would really prefer that I go see her today. She was sure everything was fine but that she would just feel better about if I did. She told me they could see me in a couple of hours. The endodontist made an incision inside of my mouth from front to back where my cheek meets my gums. She squeezed the cheek to try to get as much fluid out as possible. Finally she used thick string to loosely stitch it leaving it open to drain over night. She gave me a Rx for antibiotics, steroids & pain. I left & returned the next day for her to remove the stitch. At that time she advised that I continue meds & return in 4 days for check up & discussion of plan. I was to remain off work until follow up. The skin on the roof of my mouth peeled off over those days, crepetis in cheek & neck, soft diet, slept all of the time, felt awful. At follow up she felt things were healing nicely all though I was still very swollen, in a lot of pain, migraines & numbness. She stated she spoke w/the dentist who had done this & this endodontist now wanted to treat me probono for the remainder of the treatment so she could follow it through but she wanted me to get a skin patch test 1st to check for a bleach allergy as she felt that was the cause. She also said that she didn't feel like it had gotten into my sinuses at all. At the moment I left I called my PCP who was on vacation all week so went to Urgent Care requested xray of my sinus cavities for proof even though it was days later. The results did show positive that left sinus cavity had inflammation but no mucus build up (because the bleach had eaten that away!). I went to an oral surgeon who felt there was no way that the swelling was due to an allergic reaction. Good news, no necrosis, he said that I would need an implant at some point because the bone would deteriorate over time. Upon my PCPs return he started me on Lyrica increasing me until I felt no pain, while on 9 pills a day, I still felt the pain AND terrible side effects so I backed down off of that. This increased my migraines again, started me on Topamax & Cymbalta. Have continued that, it doesn't take the constant pain away. It has been over a year now so according to the neurologist I have permanent Trigemenal nerve damage. I can't squint, laugh, smile, Elvis lip or anything without a LOT of pain still even with meds. My VitaminD is dangerously low, VitaminB12 is low & bilirubin is high, I have lost 20lbs, I'm sick often, no sex drive and have been unable to orgasm since this occurred, probably all because of meds & depression. I haven't been able to KISS KISS my husband or kiss my kids w/o caution. Spoons & drinking from glasses difficult. Meds are expensive, never took before & I shouldn't have to pay. My life has changed forever at 31. Finding an atty near IMPOSSIBLE. I don't want to be rich from this, but shouldn't have to pay for meds for sure. Looking forward to feedback. Thank you. Sin
  4. Open Question: Dental Impressionsss? - Soon be getting braces and was wondering what are they? I know they put this putty stuff in ur mouth. Does it have any taste? Will it make you gag? Because when I get x rays, I gag a little. Thanks
  5. Open Question: Dental assisting programs in California? - I plan on going to dental assisting school but I had a few questions about it. Are ALL dental schools private colleges? Can I go to a university and take courses there and get my AA in dental assisting? The reason I ask is because my father is a veteran and if I go to a university in California I basically get free tuition. All of the dental ASSISTING programs I have found are private colleges and my tuition would not be covered there. Also, what is the typical pricing for a dental assisting program? The one I am looking at as 10 months and is about $20,000 is this typical? Any other details would help. (What it's like, how hard it is, if it was enjoyable, etc.)
  6. Open Question: Dental filling gone wrong? - I've had this one tooth worked on several times by 4 dentists. Each time the filling became bigger, with the last filling caused the nerve to pull away (as if car was pulling out of parking space). I also have paratheisia since last June. Most of the feeling has come back from numbness just this January. The very tight sensation remains on bottom half of jawbone. My lower lip seem to get to catch in between teeth. I recently had tooth infection on same tooth. Now dentist is saying a root canal has to be done along with a crown....
  7. Open Question: Dental insurances that cover braces...or at least some of it? - I'm 21.... not in school or anything. i really need braces. do any dental plans/insurances cover braces or at least part of it?? i live in pa if that matters at all.
  8. Open Question: Getting a bridge right after Invisalign? - I had a situation with congenitally missing upper incisors (left and right maxillary laterals). The left and right maxillary cuspids behind them had partially grown into where the laterals should have been, and we have successfully used Invisalign to move them back with the intention of doing dental implants. We were unable to get the roots to move, so we can't do implants for the missing teeth. The other option is a bridge of some type. My main question now about getting a bridge is...I know that the maxillary cuspids on either side will have to be filed down to a peg shape, as well as the upper front central incisors. My concern is that the cuspids and central incisors have had a lot of movement. The cuspids were moved back quite a lot, and the central incisors originally had like a 4 or 5mm gap between them, and they were also too far back in the gum and were moved more forward in the gum. I'm fine with the idea of getting a bridge, but I'm wondering about the potential movement of these teeth as they are trying to get back where they were. If we put a bridge on there, would a fixed bridge be best? The Maryland and Cantelever do not seem too feasible to keep the teeth from breaking it when they try to move back. But at the same time, I'm a little iffy about having my upper front central incisors filed down when we have spent all of this time moving them forward and pulling them down further out of the gum to make them longer; only to file them down. If we put a bridge on them, will they break it when trying to move back to where they were? Or will it be enough to hold them and eventually (after years and years) cause the teeth to quit trying to move back to where they were? I guess I'm also concerned about possibly having a lisp with a fixed bridge. Add that to a couple of bad experiences...the first dentist that I went to, I had a cavity in the last lower back wisdom tooth. They numbed just about my whole head by giving me three different shots, because I could still very much feel the tooth when he tried to drill out the cavity. He eventually sent me to an oral surgeon to have it removed, because the pain was incredibly as he drilled. My own present dentist is one of the finest in the city of 7 million people that I live in. He's highly recommended and people fly from all over to go to him. He specializes in general dentistry, cosmetic and implant dentistry. But even he was a little aggressive on the drill when filing off my first set of Invisalign buttons (to have impressions to get a second year of refinements, which I'm on now)...so it very much hurt when they filed the Invisalign buttons down with no numbing of the teeth. I have really sensitive teeth...the vibration from the drill hurt a lot, he was pressing pretty hard on it and the suction drying out the teeth makes it even worse and gives them that "cold" feeling. So I'm concerned also...will I have any pain during the filing down of these cuspids and central incisors, if I did go with a fixed bridge?
  9. Open Question: I am unsure about dental charges. I am an NHS patient and need a bridge and two teeth out. i thought this was? - under Band 3 but my dentist wants to charge over £1000. any thoughts?.
  10. Open Question: I think I picked out my cavity? - So I have this black spot on my tooth.. obviously its a cavity. I have no dental insurance and I try to take really good care of my teeth. Well when I was flossing I took the end of my threader and poked it. My threader went into my tooth and got most of the black out. Is this okay? I'm gonna find a free clinic on Monday.. I just want to know if I'm good for the time being. Thanks!
  11. Open Question: My mom's gums seem to be swollen and bleeding? - My mom has a bridge for many bottom teeth, particularly across the front. For the past few days, her lower gums have been hurting all across the front on the gum that is under where the bridge is. I looked at with a flashlight and it looks puffy and swollen. Even as she pulled her bottom lip down, it caused the gum around some of the bottom bridge teeth to bleed onto those teeth. She has a bridge because about 12 of her teeth in various areas on the top and bottom were extracted about a year or more ago. They were bad teeth and several across the bottom front were coming out they were so loose, due to gum disease. She had a bunch of scaling and all sorts of cleaning done, and the dentist gave her a bridge for the lower teeth that were pulled. She has been brushing 2-3 times per day and flossing sometimes 2-3 times per day, as well. She also uses mouthwash. She said that this morning when she woke up, it was like the taste buds on the back of her tongue were larger than normal. The bottom front of the gum looks puffy around the bridge, and she said it hurts in another part of the gum, as well. She hasn't had any problems apart from the teeth being pulled a long time ago. That required a hospital visit - they pulled them all out at once and sent her home bleeding all over the place, and I ended up taking her to the ER because the bleeding wouldn't stop and she passed out trying to make it to the bed. The dental director of the dentist paid all hospital bills because she spent a day and a half in the hospital and was weaking for about 10 days after that incident. I realize that she did have gum disease...but even the dental director knew himself (and thus why they paid) that they shouldn't have pulled them all at once and sent her home like that. She had found another dentist when all of that mess got straightened out and he's the one who gave her the bridge and he said her gums were improving over what they were before. She is on day 3 of Amoxicillin and Potassium Clauvalunate (spelling?) antibiotics...875mg and 125mg. I think her gum may be infected...she was wondering how that would work if a dentist gave her an antibiotic and she's already taking the other and has 7 days left. Any advice? Trying to get an appointment for her first thing on Monday.
  12. Open Question: Problems with negligent dentist and oral surgery, should I see a lawyer? - Last Friday (8 days ago) I was scheduled to have 3/3 wisdom teeth pulled, 1 of which was a bony compaction. The dentist only pulled the compacted one. I called the emergency line at 7pm-ish, and got a voicemail, which begs the question what if it were truly an emergency?? So I waited to the next morning and when asked why he didnt pull the other ones he told me "brain fart" i appreciate the honesty, but... seriously.... It was on a friday so I had to wait until monday (drive an hour away to see him at a different location) and get more surgery to get the other two out. He said my bottom one (compacted one) had a slight dry socket and infection. (been taking antibiotics as prescribed.) He cleaned out the wound, and took the top two out while I was under. I woke up in a lot of pain where my compacted tooth was, I think he gave me a numbing shot (a little fuzzy) which helped a little but was still in a lot of pain. It;s day 8, my compacted tooth site is still very sore, and feels like i have nerve damage. (i have nerve damage on one of my fingers so im familiar with the sensation) is that normal?? Im afraid to call his office because 1.) he already screwed up and made light of it, and I dont trust him. and 2.) If this is a malpractice I highly doubt any one would let me know. He's a nice enough guy, so I hope it doesnt come to that, I just feel like I'm being mishandled and being in an accelerated school with having a 30 hr/week job, I cant afford anymore dental errors. Thank you for reading, sorry lost post :/
  13. Open Question: Questions for dental assistant? - do the dentist send you to tail gate the patients to make sure they pay at the desk? there are no records any more it is all in the computer. I think they are not sure my home address is real
  14. Open Question: Severe dental pain, dentists I've seen haven't been helpful. Any ideas? - One of my upper teeth is constantly aching/throbbing, and about 4-5 times a day, it becomes so painful that it's to point where I cry and the pain keeps me awake at night for at least an hour. My tooth is also extremely sensitive: I can't drink soups, can hardly have warm dishes like fried rice, showering for more than 5 minutes is painful (to the tooth), and I can't talk while walking outside without pain because the air is too cold. (I live in the Northeast.) The pain is starting to make concentrating on schoolwork difficult. All of these symptoms started about a month ago. So far, I've seen two dentists, both of whom have concluded that there isn't anything outwardly wrong with my tooth. I've had x-rays taken, and the dentists seem to think that my tooth is just "extra sensitive". After two weeks of antibiotics (Amoxicillin), the pain hasn't lessened. I take aspirin on a regular basis, but it seems completely ineffective. Has anyone had something similar happen? Are there any dentists who might be able to offer more insight?

Open Question: Will I have dental splint while I have braces or after? - I know dental splints are worn BEFORE braces, but I had braces to fix a gap between my upper front teeth and to fix the TMJ. But I still have my braces on. (I'll have retainers after)
