Gains from Restorative Dental Procedures

In the last 40 years, dental implants have been a part of restorative dental procedures. When it comes to the dental profession, from implant materials to the longevity and the esthetic quality to the placement techniques, there has been much progress in all aspects of implants through the years. Originally invented in Sweden, dental implants are made of ultra strong titanium and they look like a large screw.

Other than use them for a single missing tooth, dental implants are also ideal if several or a whole arch of teeth are missing. Other than stimulating bone growth, another thing done by implants is stabilizing the restoration that sits on top of it. For missing teeth, the blood supply and activity of the tooth is no longer useful for the gums and bone it was previously attached to.  Considering that there is nothing to bite against for the opposing tooth on the opposite jaw, it can grow towards the space created by the missing tooth. The implants are positioned directly in the jawbone and under the gums with surgery.

For them to osseo integrate and for bone to grow around them, the surgical site with the implants is left under the gums.  Taking these Swiss implants into consideration, it is possible to place a provisional can after the first surgery. The gums are given some time to heal after an abutment or implant post is connected to it. It is after 6 to 8 weeks when the final tooth restoration is custom fitted onto the abutment. This final restoration could be a crown, bridge or an implant supported denture.

A common assumption when it comes to implants is that they are painful as long as they are in. The only time this will occur is when the implant is not placed properly. Naturally, there is some discomfort immediately after surgery. Before implants, people with dentures, a full arch of fabricated teeth, or partials, several fabricated teeth, had no options when they were unable to get a firm, strong bite on food. Chewing is important to a person’s nutrition and overall health.  There are times when people shy away from foods when there is denture slippage, missing teeth, or teeth that do not occlude properly.

It is extremely challenging to eat a balanced diet of only softer foods.  Dentures are better to have than maintaining natural teeth and this is a common misconception people have. What people think is that replacing their teeth with dentures would make it easier for them to handle their oral health care. Dentures are not really as comfortable. When it comes to dentures, the initial custom fit can loosen over time with a number of factors. Dentures have no capacity to match the stability and solid foundation that dental implants create.  When it comes to the technology in implant dentistry, people can benefit tremendously because we live in such a great era of dentistry. Besides offering restoration stability which allows people to eat healthier diets, implants also offer bone and gum stimulation. Nothing can ever replace a healthy, natural tooth but their patients will definitely be smiling once dental professionals use dental implants.
