Stained Teeth can Affect Self Confidence and Inhibit Smiling

Over time teeth can become stained and lose their whiteness, which may not affect their health but can look unattractive and damage the self confidence, making a person self conscious about smiling.

Stains can be caused over time by food and drink, such as wine, tea or coffee, or strongly coloured fruits like blackcurrants. Smoking also stains the teeth but in this case there are likely to be other effects besides staining that can damage both teeth and gums.

Some people may have staining under the surface, which can be caused by certain antibiotics or tiny cracks in the teeth which take up stains.

While the colour of tooth enamel varies between people in the same way as hair and skin colour and can range from an ivory colour to a purer white, stain removal, or whitening, will still improve the appearance of the teeth.

There are two methods for tooth whitening, one carried out by the cosmetic dentist, the other, a home remedy.

The advantage of having the treatment done by the dentist is the convenience and speed because the dentist will have access to methods and equipment that are not available over the counter and for which proper training is needed.

The treatment can be fitted around the working day if, for example, the patient is working in the Brisbane CBD, where the dental surgery is located for convenience.

In-surgery tooth whitening can improve the tooth shade by up to eight shades from a single one-hour treatment and the results can last for several years.

Generally the treatment involves first applying a rubber shield or a gel on the gums to protect them. They will then apply the whitening product to your teeth, using a specially made tray which fits the patient’s mouth. Some of the latest treatments use a laser which speeds up the process of the whitening product.

The alternative is to use a home whitening kit supplied by the cosmetic dentist in which custom-made whitening trays are moulded from high quality acrylic and shaped to fit the contours of the teeth and gums precisely, preventing any gum irritation. The dentist will also supply the whitening product and give the patient instructions in its use.

Results will vary from person to person and the time the treatment last for will also vary, depending on the individual’s oral care routine and their consum, ption of the kinds of products that can cause staining.
